The ever-changing electronic music culture poses more challenges for DJs, according to Richie Hawtin.
He believes the worldwide popularity of EDM is a reason for this, as explained in an interview with High Snobiety.
When asked how the electronic has changed, Hawtin said: “Electronic music was always very DIY and a niche community virtually unknown to the rest of the world. Now with EDM, the secret community has been blown out, so there are more challenges to maintain our anonymity, control, and DIY aesthetic.”
He also revealed how many have uncertainties about the future, admitting some “don’t really know where it’s going, or how we’re supposed to act.”
In the interview, he also talks about his DJ style, equipment he used in the early days and his early rave experiences.
